Robert Zemeckis Just Waiting For Go-Ahead On 'Roger Rabbit' Sequel Nov 30th 2012, 14:00

With directors like George Lucas and Steven Spielberg converting their previous films to 3-D, it's not difficult to imagine that something from Robert Zemeckis' career, like "Back to the Future" for example, would be next up for the jump to another dimension.

But when MTV News' Josh Horowitz put the question to the legendary director, Zemeckis said that he would only consider his 1988 comedy, "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," for conversion.

"The only one is' Roger Rabbit,' because you could really pull the animation out as a separate element. It would be very spectacular 3-D," Zemeckis said. "As far as converting, the 'Back to the Future" films... I don't see the point in that. But they did a test on 'Roger' back in 2006, somewhere around then, and it looks really great."

Speaking of Roger, there has long been talk of a sequel being in the works, and Zemeckis confirmed that while he's happy with the script, all that's left is to wait for Disney.

"I'm happy with the script. It's very good. It's written by the original writers, and it's good," he said. "[But Disney] is still thinking about it. If I were to do the sequel, it would be done just like the first one. It would look the same way, but we would present it in 3-D in its release. I would do all of the animation hand-drawn; 2-D, but using 3-D tools. It wouldn't be like Pixar 3-D. It wouldn't look like that."

But times have changed since the cartoon crossover. Pixar characters may have taken over animation, but they're staying out of any potential "Roger Rabbit" sequel.

"No, this would again be another period movie," he said. "That's all I can say!"

What Are You Seeing This Weekend? Nov 30th 2012, 15:00

Lincoln

After two weekends of battling it out, three weathered combatants will once again square off at the weekend box office.

With the only new release being "Killing Them Softly," the R-rated crime film from "Assassination of Jesse James" team Brad Pitt and director Andrew Dominik," the three holdover from the previous weeks are expected to dominate once again.

But what will you be seeing? Are you finally going to get around to seeing "Lincoln"? (Because you really should.) Or is "Skyfall" more your cup of tea? But of course, there's also "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2." Decisions, decisions.

Vote in our poll afer the jump!

Five Reasons To See 'Killing Them Softly' Nov 30th 2012, 16:00

Killing Them

In the five years since its release, "The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford" has become an unlike but entirely deserving cult classic. Now Brad Pitt has reteamed with his former director, Andrew Dominik, to adapt George V. Higgins' 70s era novel "Cogan's Trade" as the 2008-set Recession drama "Killing Them Softly."

Here are your five reasons to see "Killing Them Softly."

Brad Pitt
Pitt has become what I like to call a "secret great actor." Rarely is he anything but superb—and "Killing Them Softly" is no exception—but what people think of most when it comes to Pitt is his celebrity status and someone who is more famous for being famous than for their talent. Here, like in "The Assassination of Jesse James," Pitt turns in standout work that deserves more consideration than we're inclined to give someone as well-known.

It Wears Its Heart On Its Sleeve
The main complaint you'll see if you read reviews of "Killing Them Softly" is that the parallels to the 2008 financial collapse are too on-the-nose. While an unfortunately valid point, the movie's political agenda at times can feel refreshing. When was the last time a film starring one of Hollywood's biggest stars not only made you think about something going on right here, right now, but also had something to say about it? Andrew Dominik is clearly mad as hell, and his film leaves no doubt in the viewers mind to hint otherwise.

The "Killing" Isn't That Soft
One sequence in particular will be worth discussing immediately after, but since it's a spoiler, I won't mention to details here. Let's just say a character eats it in way that's more beautiful than 99 percent of the scenes you'll see at the theater this year.

George V. Higgins
What does work delightfully well is Dominik's evocation of the world of author George V. Higgins, the man behind the phenomenal "The Friends of Eddie Coyle." When Dominik sticks to the chatty conversations between low-lifes and filters them through his beautiful cinematic lens, what's left is the making of a modern classic. This is probably best realized in the conversations between Pitt's Jackie Cogan and Richard Jenkins' Driver. Both actors have such an uncanny ability to deliver smart and fresh dialogue in a way that makes the material seem even smarter and fresher.

The Final Line
Just when you're beginning to question whether or not Dominik actually has something to say instead of just pointing out obvious parallels, Pitt delivers a devastating monologue, which seals the deal and makes for one explosive ending.

Sweet Tweet: Common Is All About The Books Nov 30th 2012, 16:15

If you're a bookworm like me, you know there's no such thing as too many books. (Maybe there's not enough shelf space, but that's another story.) And all you bookworm philanthropists out there need to give Common a hand, because he has some amazing reading/giving news for you.

The rapper Tweeted:

This is a great org that gives books to kids.northparan.comkeep up the good work @northparan fb.me/1TkKuSJIU

— COMMON (@common) November 29, 2012

North Paran is an online bookstore that concentrates on books about or by African Americans. And every time they sell a book, they give a brand new children's book to a child who might not be able to afford or get books otherwise. Now that's a win-win situation, and it's a perf idea for the holiday season. North Paran works with non-profits from around the globe to keep their buy-a-book-donate-a-book structure going.

There are different categories of books you can get, including Bargain Books, Kids & Teens and Literature & Fiction. And didja know that Common is an author himself? In 2011 Atria Books published his memoir "One Day It'll All Make Sense," and North Paran has it as one of their titles.

Of course, this isn't the first time we've heard about Common helping kids. He started the Common Ground Foundation to help out young people, especially inner city youth. So why not join forces with the rapper and buy a book so you can give a book?

Another Cinderella Movie?: The Best Twists On The Tale Nov 28th 2012, 22:11

Ella Enchanted

By Hannah Soo Park

We've got our eye on another fairytale remake, with today's news that Cate Blanchett may be lending her signature ice-cold gaze to the part of Cinderella's evil stepmother in Disney's upcoming untitled project. According to The Wrap, the "Hobbit" star is the first in talks to join Mark Romanek's live-action take on the classic tale.

Before you roll your eyes at the thought of yet take on happily ever after, consider the plot, which follows a doomed politically arranged marriage plot involving a prince and, of course, Cinderella. With Blanchett and Romanek on board, we're thinking this one won't involve pumpkin carriages and talking mice.

With that said, this won't be the first twist added to the preexisting cookie-cutter storyline—from the Muppets to gender role reversals, we break down some of the most unexpected and wacky twists we've seen in Cinderella's movie past.

Cinderfella (1960)
Director: Frank Tashlin
Cast: Jerry Lewis, Ed Wynn, Judith Anderson, Anna Maria Alberghetti
The Twist: A gender swap shakes up the typical lineup of characters, with Lewis playing Cinderfella—who also goes by Fella—a down-in-the-dumps orphan who decides to court Princess Charmein in the pursuit of his happily ever after. Meanwhile, his evil stepmother and stepbrothers Maximilian and Rupert plot to thwart his plan.

Cinderella Meets Fella (1938)
Director: Tex Avery
Cast: Voices by Mel Bianc, Bernice Hansen, Danny Webb
The Twist: One of many animated versions, "Cinderella Meets Fella" happens to make our list because of its priceless and random plotline--one that involves Cinderella calling the police when her fairy Godmother is late (she later ends up finding her sitting in a bar.) Oh, and did we mention that Cinderella ends up meeting Prince Charming Egghead?

Hey, Cinderella! (1969)
Director: Jim Henson
Cast: Belinda Montgomery, Robin Ward, Joyce Gordon, Pat Galloway
The Twist: Okay, we know the plot isn't exactly original, but it's always worth mentioning when you throw Muppets into the equation. Kermit makes his first appearance as a frog in this goofy comedic TV movie, directed by Henson himself.

Ella Enchanted (2004)
Director: Tommy O'Haver
Cast: Anne Hathaway, Hugh Dancy, Cary Elwes, Steve Coogan, Aidan Mcardle, Minnie Driver, Vivica A. Fox
The Twist: "Ella Enchanted" may involve the usual suspects—a fairy godmother and Prince Charming—but hear us out on this one. Hathaway plays a sassy Ella, who pretty much takes matters into her own hands and goes on a quest to free herself from her "gift" of obedience. Along the way, she fights ogres and giants, and pretty much saves her prince from a giant snake.

Working Girl (1988)
Director: Mike Nichols
Cast: Melanie Griffith, Harrison Ford, Sigourney Weaver, Alec Baldin, Joan Cusack, Philip Bosco, Nora Dunn
The Twist: Melanie Griffith takes the leading role in this modern-day adaptation, set in the male-dominated cutthroat '80s workforce. The best part? This Cinderella is a self-made, ambitious and opportunistic Cinderella, who strives to get ahead and reach the top of the corporate ladder—a long way from scrubbing floors and singing with birds.

Ever After (1998)
Director: Andy Tennant
Cast: Drew Barrymore, Anjelica Huston, Dougray Scott, Megan Dodds, Melanie Lynskey
The Twist: A portrayal rooted in reality rather than the magic and fairytale element tied to the classic Cinderella tale. Plus, the story's plot involves a piece of historical fiction in the form of Leonardo da Vinci, who spews off words of wisdom to the distressed Danielle de Barbarac.

Hot Chip's 'Don't Deny Your Heart' Video Takes On Homophobia in Sports Nov 28th 2012, 22:10

Photo: (Getty)

Brit electro band Hot Chip just released a video for their single "Don't Deny Your Heart," and the soccer-themed video sends a powerful message about homophobia in the athletic world. The music video -- which is modeled after a video game -- centers around two players on opposing teams whose tension runs a litttttle deeper than the field.

+ Watch Hot Chip's "Don't Deny Your Heart"

Hot Chip's video is controversial -- not simply because it features men kissing men, but because it features male athletes kissing male athletes. On top of that, the players are members of two of the bitterest rivals in the soccer world: Manchester United and Manchester City. As the video goes on, it becomes clear that the players' tension is less about the game and more about their feelings for each other. When they can't resist any longer, they begin kissing on the field…then suddenly everyone's makin' out!

The "Don't Deny Your Heart" video makes a bold and daring statement against homophobia in sports, which many athletes have been speaking up about lately. "The mechanisms are primitive. [There is] a classic stereotype notion that a real man should be brave, strong, aggressive and loyal…and it is not the image that a football supporter associates with a gay person," said Manchester United goalie Anders Lindegaard in a recent interview. But Anders -- and Hot Chip -- want people to know that gay men are strong, brave, aggressive, loyal, and damn good athletes!

Whether it be for fear of being treated differently by their teammates or fear of being viewed differently by their fans, it can be particularly hard for athletes to come out. However, sexuality has nothing to do with one's ability to play sports, eh. As illustrated in the video, it can take one athlete's coming out to make an impact -- but attitudes within the sport have to change to create a safe environment in which that can happen.

The MLS is def taking steps to diminish homophobia and spread love on the field -- and you can, too. If you're all for hot soccer player lovin', take action below to help the You Can Play foundation combat homophobia in athletics.

Act-Off! Who's Gonna Get Birthday Action From You: Miley Cyrus or Trey Songz? Nov 29th 2012, 00:00

Photo: (Getty)

Miley Cyrus and Trey Songz may be on opposite sides of the music spectrum, but the R&B babe and pop princess actually have a lot in common! They share the same birthday month, both have amazing physiques, and -- because it's what's on the inside that counts -- they're two of the most giving celebs in Hollywood.

Since Trey turned 28 today and Miley kissed her teen years goodbye last Friday, let's take a moment to celebrate all of their great work just over this past month. Which of the two (or maybe both) will you take action for to celebrate?

+ Trey Nurtures Angels With A Heart

Trey founded the Angels with Heart Foundation in 2010 to help underprivileged youth and to inspire fans to volunteer in their communities. Rather than giving him gifts at his shows, Trey asks his fans to give back to people and organizations in their hometowns. 'Cause, you know, why throw a perfectly good bra on stage when you could donate it to a homeless shelter?! The Grammy-nominated singer performed on Sunday to benefit the org, and volunteered for Angels With A Heart Month last week in the one place on Earth NOBODY goes to volunteer: Las Vegas. When I think Vegas, I think stripper heels and tequila shots, but apparently Trey is a much better person than I am. He recently spent his time in Vegas volunteering at Three Square Food Bank, where he packed food bags for chronically ill senior citizens.

+ Miley Rocks The Vote

Miley recently turned 20, but instead of throwing a "Party in the USA" with gifts galore, she asked friends and fans to donate to her favorite charities: Saving SPOT! dog rescue and the Starkey Hearing Foundation, which brings hearing aids to people around the world. WTF happened to people being selfish on their birthdays?! I was planning on having a night of presents and fun centered around me, me, me, but giiiirl, you're makin' me look bad! Miley was also one of many celebs who voted for the first time this year...and she looked damn good doing it. It took me a while, but I'm really starting to dig her bleach-blonde pixie cut. From filming a Rock The Vote PSA, to Tweeting up a storm leading up to Election Day, Miley did her best to get her fans as enthusiastic about voting as she was.

Trey has also made his voice heard around the election, and Miley is no stranger to volunteering, too. So whose abs birthday are you ready to celebrate most? We know it's tough to choose, but take action below to support your favorite singer's favorite charity!

Hurry, this Act-Off ends Wednesday, December 5 at 11:59 p.m.!

'Riddick' Gets An International Poster Nov 29th 2012, 14:59

Riddick

It kind of came out of nowhere, but there is a new Riddick movie starring Vin Diesel scheduled to come out next year. Creatively titled "Riddick," the new film will be the third movie to feature the "Pitch Black" character.

Though there's no specific release date yet, the very first international poster for "Riddick" just arrived on the web, via ComingSoon.

The one sheet doesn't offer much insight into the film, except that Vin Diesel is going to be in it as Riddick and he wears goggles a lot.

Click past the jump to see the full poster and read a synopsis of "Riddick"

Riddick

Synopsis:

In the film, written and directed by Twohy, the infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he's encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty. The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won't leave the planet without Riddick's head as their trophy.

James Cameron Wants To Shoot 'Avatar' Sequels In Late 2013 Nov 29th 2012, 15:30

Avatar

Movie franchises like "Star Wars," "The Avengers," and "Justice League" seem to be grabbing every other headline these days; so much so that it's been easy to forget that James Cameron is currently planning two new films to follow up the biggest movie of all time.

We knew that at least two more "Avatar" movies are in the pipeline from Cameron, with potential for a fourth if the director needs more money to dive into the ocean, but now he's shed some light on when things might start rolling.

Speaking with The West Australian (via The Playlist), Cameron said that he's currently writing the scripts at his recently purchased New Zealand farm and hopes to be done by February. The ultimate goal is to begin filming by late 2013.

"I want to get these scripts nailed down, I don't want to be writing the movie in post-production," Cameron said. "We kind of did that on the first picture, I ended up cutting out a lot of scenes and so on and I don't want to do that again."

With Cameron now living in New Zealand, it should be no surprise that he made it out to the premiere of Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," which utilized controversial high frame-rate technology. Cameron also told the paper that depending on how audiences respond to "The Hobbit," he may adopt the tech for "Avatar 2 and 3."

"If there is acceptance of 48, then that will pave the way for 'Avatar' [sequels] to take advantage of it," Cameron said. "We charged out ahead on 3-D with 'Avatar,' now Peter's doing it with 'The Hobbit.' It takes that kind of bold move to make change."

Are you excited to hear about progress on the "Avatar" sequels? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter!

Cheerleaders Shave Heads For Cancer Fundraiser. Would You Do It Too? Nov 27th 2012, 22:19

How would you feel about shaving your head to fight cancer and stand in solidarity with patients who lost their hair from chemo? Lady Gaga's done it, country singer Kellie Pickler's done it, and now Indianapolis Colts cheerleaders have done it.

Earlier this football season, Colts coach Chuck Pagano was diagnosed with leukemia. After his diagnosis, a CHUCKSTRONG campaign was born and the Colts are doing what they can to raise money for leukemia research and to honor their coach. But it's not just the players getting involved -- the cheerleaders have also gotten in on the action.

Cheerleader Megan M. said she would shave her head if $10,000 could be raised for CHUCKSTRONG. Two weeks passed, and more than $22,000 was raised! During the Colts' game on Sunday, Megan had her head shaved in the space between the third and fourth quarter. While Megan was the initial cheerleader to offer her hair up, she was joined by Crystal Ann, another cheerleader. And it was the team's mascot, Blue, that did the shaving.

The cheerleaders' support is getting a lot of buzz online, but they're not the first to do this. Who here remembers when Lady Gaga shaved part of her head after her friend and photographer Terry Richardson lost his mom to cancer? And Kellie Pickler showed what an awesome BFF she was when she shaved her entire head after a friend was diagnosed with the C-word. Are we going to see more and more shaved heads out there? What do you think? Would you shave your head to fight cancer? Weigh in on our poll below!

Marion Cotillard Explains The Katy Perry-'Rust And Bone' Connection Nov 27th 2012, 22:14

"Rust and Bone," the Cannes entry and the latest film from critically-lauded French director Jacques Audiard, doesn't exactly sound like the kind of movie that would feature a Top 40 hit from Katy Perry on the soundtrack.

The story of how two lost souls find each other after one of them suffers an accident during a killer whale routine at an aquarium doesn't scream "Baby, you're a firework," but the mega-hit pops up a number of times on the soundtrack, including some deeply emotional scenes featuring Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard.

When MTV News' Josh Horowitz spoke with Cotillard while she was doing press for the film, she explained how the pop song ended up in the serious French drama.

Read more after the jump!

"['Firework'] was not written in the script. That was in the [whale] show, and that fits perfectly with [the scene]. In the song, there's something very emotional and very energetic," Cotillard said. "It's a very interesting song because it's a very big pop song, but at the same time, there is something. It must be the mix of how she sings it and the music, but I was actually very happy that they chose that song out of the show for this special scene on the balcony. "

Although Cotillard says she is a fan of the song, she has yet to meet Perry in person. "I'm really looking forward to it," she said. "I hope I will."

'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' Full Photo Gallery Released Nov 28th 2012, 14:19

Hobbit

With two and a half weeks left until "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" hits theaters, Warner Bros. is pulling out all the promotional stops for what is looking to be another massive trilogy for the studio. A lucky few (well, technically more than a few) attended "The Hobbit" premiere in New Zealand on Wednesday, and the rest of us out there who won't be watching the movie early will have to settle for a whole heck of a lot of images from the film.

At least we're talking about a really, really lot of photos here. You can check them out in all their glory over at SuperHeroHype, but be prepared to dedicate at least a half an hour poring over their eight page image gallery. This is the entire image gallery released for "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey."

Included are both official and behind-the-scenes images as well as posters for the film. The pictures chronicle the beginning of Bilbo Baggins' adventure with the dwarves and Gandalf, as well as the side storylines involving Gandalf, Galadriel and Elrond. Yes, there are even some trolls thrown in there.

Hobbit

"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" is due in theaters on December 14. It follows the adventures of Bilbo Baggins as he travels with a group of dwarves who seek to win back their mountain from the dragon Smaug. It will be followed by "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" on December 13, 2013 and "The Hobbit: There and Back Again" on July 18, 2014.

Matthew Vaughn Collaborator Suggests 'Star Wars' Gig Is His Nov 28th 2012, 16:02

Star Wars

Does Jason Flemyng know something we don't about Matthew Vaughn and "Star Wars: Episode VII"?

It certainly seems like he has a different understanding of the rumors surrounding his frequent collaborator and Hollywood's most closely-watched directing gig. At an event for "Seven Psychopaths" in the UK, Vaughn's frequent collaborator spoke about the possibility of reteaming with him for "Episode VII" as if it would most likely happen and the deal was done.

"Me and Matt have done nine films together, so I'm sure I'll get the call for 'Star Wars,' but I'm sure it's going to be [impersonating Vaughn], 'Flemyng, no, Flemyng, I know on paper it doesn't look like much, but I promise you, it's essential to the part.' So we'll see what happens."

Harmless enough, but then when the interviewer asks if Vaughn is interested in the job, Flemyng gets confused.

"I think that's—yeah, he's interested, yeah, by the deal," he said with a telling look on his face.

So what is this exactly? It's not quite the confirmation many blogs are making it out to be, but there's a reason Flemyng reacted the way he did. Of the contenders we know of, Vaughn appears to be the most realistic at this point and one of the few that haven't taken their name out of the running. For now, take it with a grain of salt and file this one away into your Matthew Vaughn evidence folder.
