One Direction Cares For The Elderly + Helps Fight Alzheimer's Jan 3rd 2013, 18:32

The members of Brit boy band One Direction may be barely legal, but that doesn't mean they don't care about the elderly. They recently auctioned off an autographed tee to raise nearly $2,000 for the British Alzheimer's Society -- a care and research organization for those suffering from Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia.

The boys got behind the cause because band-member Louis Tomlinsin's girlfriend's grandfather is currently battling dementia. (Talk about a great boyfriend!) Dementia is a general term for any loss of mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer's is a type of dementia that specifically causes memory loss; in its final stages, some people even forget who and where they are!

One Direction aren't the first celebs to shine a light on Alzheimer's. Bradley Cooper, Seth Rogen, and tons of other big names have lent their voices and personal stories to the Alzheimer's Association. There is still no known cure for Alzheimer's, but the more we speak up, the closer we'll get to finding one! Take action below to learn more about Alzheimer's. Want to do more for the senior in your life? Check out DoSomething.org's Grandparents Gone Wired below, too!

New 'Star Trek' Photos Tease Danger And 'Darkness' Jan 3rd 2013, 20:11

Star Trek

How about some brand new photos from "Star Trek Into Darkness" to continue to help welcome in 2013? Today Paramount unleashed a collection of 11 new production stills. Not quite as exciting as a full-length trailer of course, but director J.J. Abrams knows what he's doing when it comes to keeping fan expectation as high as possible without actually revealing any plot points.

So without further ado, feast your eyes at the images below and join us in over-analyzing the hidden meanings that may or may not be embedded within the highly-stylized frames. On the whole the common theme in these photos is action and anticipation; either our heroes are in a defensive pose holding guns or communication devices or they're looking at each other with worried expressions, likely thinking about some impending doom involved with their introduction to Benedict Cumberbatch's multi-dimensional villain.

Check out the photos after the jump!

"Star Trek Into Darkness" opens on May 17.

Julianne Hough Talks Past Abuse: "I Was Abused, Mentally, Physically, Everything" Jan 3rd 2013, 19:59

Photo: (Getty)

Abuse is never okay, and Julianne Hough will be playing an abuse survivor in the soon-to-be-releasd film "Safe Haven." While she's playing a role, it falls closer to home than many roles do, because Julianne was also abused when she was younger.

The "Dancing with the Stars" celeb didn't go into great detail about the abuse when talking with Cosmopolitan magazine. As a young dancer she lived in London for a while, and she said, "While I was in London, I was abused, mentally, physically, everything."

She was threatened about what would happen if she left the person or people who were abusing her. "I was told if I ever went back to the United States, three things were going to happen. One: I was going to amount to nothing. Two: I was going to work at Whataburger. And three: I was going to end up a slut. So, it was like, I can't go back. I have to be this person."

But Julianne did turn her life around and escaped from this abuse. Mental, physical and emotional abuse are all serious things, and it's important you get out of any sort of a relationship that has abuse in it. Abuse can come from BFs, GFs, parents or even friends. What's important is understanding it's abuse, understanding it's not your fault, and protecting yourself. You might also recall AnnaLynne McCord opening up about past sexual abuse and the episode of "Teen Mom" dealing with domestic abuse. When people like Julianne, AnnaLynne and others talk about abuse, it's because they want to spread awareness and keep it from happening again.

A 'Fiscal Cliff' Deal Has Passed, But WTF Does It All Mean?! Jan 3rd 2013, 21:24

Photo: (Getty)

Many of us spent the first day of 2013 recovering from the last night of 2012, but the men and women of Congress didn't have that luxury because they were busy coming to an agreement on the fiscal cliff. A deal was finally made on Tuesday evening but WTF does it mean and, more importantly, how does it affect you?

If you want to know what coulda happened without a deal, this video will help explain that. Now, grab a celebratory glass of milk (I'll explain later) and lemme break it down for ya. The fiscal cliff is a series of tax and spending cuts that was set to kick in at the start of this year. Although Congress hasn't yet reached an agreement on the spending cuts, they have reached one on taxes.

+ Income Tax

Income tax rates will stay the same for most Americans, but the rate for Justin Bieber people making over $400,000 a year or Brangelina couples making more than $450,000 combined will increase from 35% to 39.6%. Itemized tax deductions for people making over $250,000 and couples making over $300,000 will be capped.

+ The Payroll Tax "Holiday" Is Over

Just as we say goodbye to the holiday season, another holiday is over: the "Payroll Tax Holiday." A couple years ago when the economy wasn't lookin' so hot, Congress lowered the Social Security payroll tax from 6.2% to 4.2% for all American workers. The goal was to give us more money to spend on shoes, and dinner, and needy girlfriends and stuff, therefore stimulating the U.S. economy. This tax "holiday" was only supposed to last a year, but was extended for another one. However, on midnight on January 1, the payroll tax returned to 6.2% on up to $113,000 of income. That means if you make $30,000 a year, you'll get about $50 less every month.

+ Insurance

Unemployment insurance is extended for the rest of the year. This is great news for the two million long-term unemployed workers who faced suddenly losing aid at the start of this week.

+ Got Milk?

Babies, kittens, and broke 20-somethings who live off cereal (me) can finally rest easy because the bill also included a measure preventing a steep increase in the price of milk.

If you're still confused, you're probably not alone. Check out this handy New York Times chart to figure out exactly how your moolah will be affected by the fiscal cliff deal.

Wanna Work On A Song With Avicii?! It Can Seriously Happen Soon! Jan 3rd 2013, 21:03

Photo: (Getty)

Do you ever get jealz of all the musicians teaming up for songs and wish you could join in? Well, you might just have an opportunity to work with Avicii on his next single. True story!

The Swedish talent explains, "I'm about to kick off the world's largest music collaboration -- and I want to work with you!" It's called Avicii x You and the project web site will be launching on January 9. "It would be just really cool to make a really good song out of so many people's different ideas," muses Avicii in the video below. So we don't know all the deets yet, but Avicii is sharing a chord progression with anyone who wants to get involved.

+ Watch Avicii x You

Writing about the project, Huffington Post said that it reminded them of "a 'We Are the World'" mission, except there's no charity involved. That got us thinking. Maybe Avicii will use this new project as a way to earn funds for a great charity. A year ago, he donated a million dollars to Feeding America, so we know he has the do-gooder blood in him.

So if you get involved, we've got a question for ya: if Avicii decides to make this charity-oriented, where would you want the money to go? Maybe to Feeding America as well? Maybe to a music charity, like something for music education? If this project is going to be as big as Avicii wants it to be (He says it's gonna make music history, did you hear that Guinness World Book Of Records?!) then this could be one awesome chance for you to collab with a big name. And while it's up to Avicii on what he does with his project, it'd be totally awesome if he does decide to go the charity route with it!

'Raid: Redemption' Director Teases Sequel Details Jan 2nd 2013, 20:30

Gareth Evans has been discussing a sequel to "The Raid: Redemption" for quite some time now. Currently known only by its Indonesian name, "Berandal" will continue the story of the unstoppable badass machine Rama (Iko Uwais) and, as far as we knew before, was supposed to start production sometime this year.

Now via his Twitter feed, Evans has cleared up a few lingering mysteries about filming "Berandal" and when the story will pick up.

Click past the jump to learn more!

Evans revealed that the sequel would pick up a mere two hours after Rama escapes the criminal-infested high-rise, and from the way Evans described the bigger threat this time around, things sound like they're going to go from bad to worse quickly.

Ok Raid 2 tidbit, we start shooting on January 19th and the first scene takes place 2hrs after the first film ends.

— Gareth Evans (@ghuwevans) January 2, 2013

Evans spoke with MTV News all the way back before the US premiere of "The Raid" last year (you can watch the video above) and ran down some general points of "Berandal" without getting too specific. "The sequel is going to be a big departure in a way, in that we won't just copy the same formula as the first film," Evans said.

"It's not going to be set within one building this time. Everything that was terrifying about the boss in that building in the first movie is small fry compared to the criminal organization we meet in the second film. We take it out into the streets, go much wider and much bigger in terms of the scope."

Are you looking forward to "Berandal"? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter!

Ke$ha Isn't Straight (Or Gay) + Has 'Zero Tolerance' For Bullies Jan 2nd 2013, 21:12

Photo: (Getty)

On New Year's Eve, Ke$ha showed us she knew how to bring the house down. Now she's also opening up about what love means to her. (Hint: it isn't about gender!)

"I don't love just men," she said in an interview with Seventeen. "I love people. It's not about a gender. It's just about the spirit that exudes from that other person you're with." If this rings a bell for you, that's because the "C'Mon" singer said something along the same lines in 2010 to Out: "I wouldn't say I'm gay or straight -- I don't like labeling things anyway. I just like people."

While Ke$ha personally isn't into labeling her sexuality, K$ has a thing or two to say about people who want to label theirs and get bullied for it. But it's not just LGBT bullying that gets her goat -- bullying for any reason is so not cool.

"I'm all about standing up to gay/lesbian/transgender bullying, but it's also about my little brother," she said. "He's 13 and he gets made fun of because he has a stutter. I just have zero tolerance for people making fun of others."

Speaking in response to Ke$ha's words, GLAAD's Seth Adam said, "Ke$ha's comments not only serve to inspire and support young people who may be struggling to come out, they also echo the support of a generation that overwhelmingly agrees that every person should be able to love openly and honestly."

Now that's something worth partying about! *tosses glitter*

[Video] A Soldier's Young Son + Wife Get Biggest Surprise Ever at Rose Parade Jan 2nd 2013, 22:40

We love a good soldier's surprise return home story! This one may just be one of my all time faves. While our brave soldiers are abroad fighting for our country, many families across the United States stayed strong this holiday season. But one fam who spent New Year's Day at the Rose Parade got the surprise of a lifetime.

Meet Miriam Pazz, a wife of Army Sgt. First Class Eric Pazz serving in Afghanistan who thought she was attending the 2013 Rose Parade as a contest winner... but the HUGE surprise had yet to occur.

Little did Miriam know, her hubby was hidden on one of the floats as each paraded through the streets of Pasadena, California. As the Natural Balance Pet Foods float arrived where Eric was hidden away, a standing ovation ensued as he emerged and walked off the float towards his ecstatic wife. *chills* Can you imagine how shocking/exciting/amazing this would be?

+ Watch Eric surprise his wife and young son

Fun fact: the float Eric was on commemorates The U.S. Working Dog Teams National Monument, the first national monument to pay tribute to military dogs. Our soldiers -- canines included -- are seriously such heros! Eric also told ABC News, "It was a really great experience. First thing I thought was, 'I hope she's not going to slap me for lying to her.' After that, seeing our son's face, how he reacted, I was really caught up into the moment." Such a great start to their New Year!

The obsession of photographing Hollywood's biggest stars has turned tragic after a paparazzo was killed chasing Justin Bieber's Ferrari. Do you think it's time for legislation? Justin and some of his Hollywood friends sure do.

The demand to photograph Hollywood's celebs has escalated into a money making industry, which often leads to paps chasing various the celebs like a little kid in a candy store. Although Justin wasn't driving his white Ferrari during the incident, he's urging for new legislation.

The Biebs revealed in a statement that his "thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim," and that he hopes "this tragedy will finally inspire meaningful legislation…to protect the lives and safety of celebrities, police officers, innocent public bystanders, and the photographers themselves."

Miley Cyrus even took to Twitter to discuss this much overdue conversation:

Hope this paparazzi/JB accident brings on some changes in '13 Paparazzi are dangerous! Wasn't Princess Di enough of a wake up call?!

— Miley Ray Cyrus (@MileyCyrus) January 2, 2013

These high-speed chases are happening far too often and the Biebs knows all about them. Justin was driving at an alarming speed as he was trying to avoid the chasing paps. With photographs selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars the the pressure is high to reveal the next celeb scandal. Or whatever. That said, we want to ask YOU: Is it time for new paparazzi legislation?

Honorable Mentions Of 2012: 'Lincoln' Dec 31st 2012, 18:30

Lincoln

You've seen our Top Ten of 2012 list, but now let's take a look back at the movies that just missed the cut. These are our Honorable Mentions of 2012.

Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" didn't exactly have the deck stacked in its favor when it came to box office success. The running time clocks in at nearly two and a half hours. It does away with the traditional biopic formula and only focuses on a small portion of the sixteenth president's life, the struggle to pass the 13th Amendment. Plus, we all know how that turned out.

But looking at Spielberg's loving portrait of one of our great national heroes ignores so much of what makes "Lincoln" a fascinating and enthralling movie from start to finish.

The most obvious and relevant place to begin is Daniel Day-Lewis' performance. Sight unseen, one would like imagine that the Academy Award winner would repackage Daniel Plainview, but nicer this time. Instead, Day-Lewis went in the opposite direction, opting for a historically accurate vocal register and a kind demeanor, much different from the stoic man we see on the back of a five dollar bill. The performance is an utter inspiration, not only from an acting standpoint, but how it complements the story and our collective history.

Though less apparent than the Method habits of the leading man, Tony Kushner's soberingly intelligent and witty screenplay deserves an equal amount of recognition. Taking on a procedural format, the audience experiences 19th century Washington and the frustrations running through the period.

What Spielberg managed to achieve here was to ignore the cynical expectations of internet commenters that were largely based on one poorly cut trailer. Coming off of "War Horse," it was easy to expect Spielberg would take a maudlin swing at one of the most beloved figures in American history without adding at teeth to his defining moment. Instead, he assembled his best effort in a decade in a manner that both stated true to his sensibilities while never undermining the complex nature of the politics.

What were your honorable mentions of 2012? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter!

We Need To Find Our Worth In Our Hearts, Not In Our Weight Jan 1st 2013, 15:00

MTV Act writer Danica Davidson battled anorexia in middle school. (Photo: Danica Davidson)

It's estimated that as many as 10% of women suffer from an eating disorder. I've got a secret for you: I know how that feels, because I used to be one of them.

I began feeling insecure about my body at the end of fifth grade, when some boys in class voted me "ugliest girl." These same guys snorted and oinked when they saw me. When I got to seventh grade, the disgust I felt toward my body was so overwhelming it would bring me to tears. I was writing lots of stories I'd share with my friends and getting high scores in school, but nothing made me feel worthy. Because the novels I was writing weren't published, I wasn't a real writer. Because I didn't get the highest score on every test, it showed I really wasn't that smart. Because I couldn't get a boyfriend, and because I could never be popular no matter how much I tried, it only showed that I must be too ugly. The fifth grade boys had been right.

When I looked up my height and weight with the BMI index, it said I was at a healthy weight. I'd compare myself to girls in magazines and movies and thought that couldn't be right. Those girls were so achingly perfect. So thin. I had gained weight that year, but instead of realizing it was a normal part of puberty and my body was changing, I was convinced this meant I was fat. This must be the reason why I couldn't get a boy to love me, and why I didn't fit in.

The majority of eating disorders start in high school or college, but in seventh grade I became anorexic. Typically I would have a hot chocolate for breakfast to make myself feel full, then have some sort of salad for lunch. I made myself skip dinner, and that was the hardest part. My stomach would hurt for hours, until bedtime. Then it would melt away into a light, pure feeling that felt like a reward for my suffering.

I read about girls eating as little as an apple a day and admired what I saw as their "strength." I was even impressed with people who could bring themselves to throw up. It was a tempting idea because I wouldn't have to be hungry all the time, but I hated the sensation of throwing up so much that I couldn't bring myself to do it.

People noticed I started losing weight, and instead of asking me if I were getting enough to eat, they complimented me on how good I looked. That egged me on. My waist got so small I could about get two hands around it. I'd lie in bed and enjoy the feel of my jutting ribs and concave stomach.

Photo: Danica as a middle schooler.

I'd like to say that all this stopped because I got a sudden revelation or realized what I was doing was a mistake. But after a few months I just got too hungry. I started eating dinner again. I didn't even eat much, but my body said, "Hooray, I remember food!" By eating small dinners I gained everything back and more. I was back to a doctor-approved weight and, of course, that meant people stopped complimenting me, because a healthy weight meant weighing too much.

At first I was devastated, but then I gradually began to see the light about my experience. The idea that You-Have-To-Be-Thin-To-Be-Worth-Something is so pervasive in our society, from the bony figures we see in magazines to the snarky comments people make on the Internet about how "fat" a healthy-looking celebrity is. When so many young people think "thinness" is their number one priority -- over developing themselves as people with kind hearts and smart, open minds; over actually being happy and accepting themselves -- we have a real issue on our hands.

My eating disorder never got as bad as it does for some women and men, who might suffer for years and experience hair loss and tooth decay or even death. But it doesn't have to get that bad to be a problem. I now recognize the danger in chasing after an airbrushed ideal that doesn't exist.

Eating real, healthy meals again not only helped my body, it cleared my head. I realized the people who mattered would like me for me, not for a body type. And I realized how shallow the obsession of weight is. I'm not saying people who are concerned about their weight are shallow; I'm saying the forces that make you think you have to be skinny are shallow.

And I've got a secret for you: starving myself didn't get me a boyfriend or bring me love. It didn't make me popular. It definitely didn't make me happy, and it didn't show the mean people of the world that they needed to stop being mean. I was paying too much attention to what I thought other people thought about me to let me be myself. To let myself be happy. There can be a difference between being thin and being healthy, and I learned the importance of health. Part of health is accepting yourself. If you love yourself, you will find the ability to be happy.

It's no secret that many people are hurting themselves physically, though actions like starving themselves, and emotionally, through low self-esteem. And it's no secret that it needs to stop. This New Year do you really need to lose 10 more pounds? Or are you -- cue Bruno Mars -- amazing just the way you are? I truly believe we need to find our worth in our hearts, not in our weight. Are you with me?

TWLOHA Brings You The Year Of Heavy And Light Jan 1st 2013, 16:00

Photo: (To Write Love On Her Arms)

No matter who you are, 2013 is shaping up to be a big year. It'll be the year Jennifer Lawrence hosts Saturday Night Live for the first time, the year Kate and Will have their royal baby and the year we all celebrate surviving the Mayan apocalypse.

For To Write Love On Her Arms (better known as TWLOHA), the theme of 2013 can probably be summed up in three words: heavy and light.

TWLOHA has been called the organization's favorite night of the year. Naturally, TWLOHA wanted to bring this evening of "songs, conversation and hope" to as many people as possible. Thanks to the $ 1 million dollars the organization won from the American Giving Awards, TWLOHA is bringing HEAVY AND LIGHT to 17 cities near you this year.

Founder Jamie Tworkowski will join Switchfoot's Jon Foreman and spoken word post Anis Mojgani at every stop on the tour with special guests like Christina Perri meeting up with them along the way.

All ages are welcome at the show, so find your tickets now and bring as many people as you can. Keeping with the idea of hope and recovery, every person who attends the tour will leave with a list of local resources of where to find help in the community.

I can't think of a better way to kick off 2013 than with a tour like this. Here's to great music, amazing causes and the year of HEAVY AND LIGHT.

The Buried Life Helps Me Become A Better Activist Jan 1st 2013, 17:00

If you don't know who The Buried Life boys are, you're missing out. Just think of them as the go-to guys for achieving all your dreams.

After all, they really want to know: "What do you want to do before you die?"

When MTV premiered "The Buried Life" in 2010, I was hooked. Four good-looking guys and a do-good tie-in? That's my kind of reality show.

They've played basketball with Obama, helped deliver a baby and landed a TV show on MTV. They agreed that for every item they crossed off their list, they would help someone cross an item off of theirs.

So who else would I turn to when coming up with my New Year's resolutions? Here's how The Buried Life is inspiring me to become a better activist in 2013:

+Embrace the Open Road

I might not have a purple RV nicknamed Penelope, but I do have access to a car and some gas money. This coming year, I want to hit the road and support my favorite causes wherever they are. First stop? TWLOHA's HEAVY AND LIGHT tour.

+Help a Stranger

I'm going to take a page out of The Buried Life's book and help a stranger achieve his or her dreams. Through sites like Kiva, I can loan a small amount to strangers to help them start their businesses.

+Do Something Crazy

I might not be up for streaking or crashing a party at the Playboy Mansion, but I can certainly follow Shay Mitchell's lead and do something bold to help my favorite cause. I'll keep you all posted on when I plan to jump out of that plane (or, you know, run that Tough Mudder).

We want to know: what's on your list of resolutions? What would you ask Duncan, Dave, Jonnie and Ben to help cross off your list?
