Sweet Tweet: Jason Mraz Says 'Banning Plastic Makes Cents' Dec 31st 2012, 15:12

Photo: (Getty)

Jason Mraz drinks a lot of water, but he makes sure not to use up a plastic bottle every time he gets thirsty. The singer-songwriter, who recently took part in MTV Exit Live in Myanmar to end slavery, used Twitter to remind us how to stay environmentally-conscious as we fly around for the holidays and into 2013.

Jason Tweeted:

Boarding my 86th flight this year. Average airport water is appx 4 bucks. Thanks to my own bottle I saved $344. Banning plastic makes cents.

— Jason Mraz (@jason_mraz) December 27, 2012

Cutting back on plastic bottle use (or, preferably, eliminating it all together) can be an easy way to help the environment. But 86 flights in one year?! How is that going green? Knowing Jason, he's probably going as green as he can with what's available. Because, let's face it: Jason Mraz loves the environment, and he does a lot of things for it.

Case in point? He got involved in Climate Reality Project's 24 Hours of Reality: The Dirty Weather Report, and was behind the launch of the Tree is a Four Letter Word program, which encourages his fans to be environmentally friendly and gives aid to local green orgs.

Jason uses his star power for a green theme, but there are also ways you can help out the environment. Stopping the use of plastic bottles is definitely one simple but good thing to do. It's almost the New Year, so what are your 2013 resolutions to get more green?

'Zero Dark Thirty': Composer Alexandre Desplat Talks Musical Suspense Dec 31st 2012, 15:30

Zero Dark Thirty

Like the majority of critics groups around the country, we think "Zero Dark Thirty" is one of the best films of 2012. And as the movie continues to rack up the accolades (four Golden Globe nominations, ten Best Picture nods from assorted film critics groups thus far), audiences will soon have more opportunities to weigh-in, thanks to its expanded release in the new year.

There are a lot of appealing aspects to Katherine Bigelow's thriller: the cultural relevance, taking a cinematic peek inside secret government operations, an A-list cast, reactions from ex-government officials and that excellent musical score backing all the action(?).

We know what you're thinking. What's so interesting about the movie music that it warrants being mentioned among the items in that list? Well, it's because this particular film score was composed by the very busy Alexandre Desplat, who is also behind the scores for "Rise of the Guardians," "Argo" (one of our favorite scores of 2012) "Moonrise Kingdom," and "Rust and Bone."

Desplat told MTV News recently that he was delighted to be able to compose music for what he called Bigelow's "masterpiece."

"I told her [that] when I saw the film," Desplat said of praising Bigelow. "The way she filmed this is even better than "The Hurt Locker" and the story is so well-written. The point of view she chose is so right because it's not taking a side. It just shows the facts through the eyes of this young CIA agent.... I like that there is no self-consciousness about seeing people being dead. There's none of that in this film. It's raw and factual."

The French musician said that in crafting music to complement the raw reality in the film, he had to make use of silence and let the atrocities of war speak for itself.

"There's less music [in this score] and when it's there it's very archaic. There's an occasion to the sound I wanted to find like it being 2000 years before like an archaic war, two tribes trying to kill each other," Desplat explained. "But it never plays the violence. It never plays the suspense. It's always about these desperate, dark feelings you have when you see people being tortured or killed and at the same time the inexorable emotion of this CIA agent going forward to her target, never letting go."

Speaking to the specific instruments incorporated in the score, Desplat said he stripped things down from a full orchestra in order to create a "dark" and strange sound.

"I just kept the celli, the bass, the violi, the brass and only one trumpet, so that I only had the darker sounding instruments of the orchestra and that creates a strange sound of its own that belongs to this film. On top of that there are a few soloists: an electric cello, a violin, a Duduk. All these sounds are blended, so you can't say who's playing what, which makes for a weird sound, an uneasy dimension."

'Arrested Development' New Season To Premiere On May 4 Dec 31st 2012, 16:30

Arrested

I think we all collectively just blue ourselves.

If a recent here-one-moment-gone-the-next posting to a Fox publicity site is to be believe, the Bluths and the Fünkes will return on May 4 with 14 new episodes, all set to premiere on Netflix simultaneously.

Oh No They Didn't took a screenshot of the post, which confirmed a larger episode order than the originally planned ten. The listing also offered the titles of the episodes, each named for a single member of the family, with some two-parters (i.e. "GOB" and "GOB 2").

Click past the jump to see the rest of the episodes.

As creator Mitch Hurwitz has described before, the new episodes will follow one character, bringing us up-to-speed with the Bluths since the show's cancellation, with some appearances from other characters from time to time. In theory, this new season will then segue into a feature film.

Check out the full episode list below.

J.J. Abrams Grants 'Star Trek' Fan's Dying Wish Dec 31st 2012, 17:30

into darkness

The rather vocal group of online J.J. Abrams haters might have a slight change of heart after reading what the fanboy director recently did to make one man's dying wish come true.

It began nearly a week ago as a desperate plea for help on Reddit. One user, posting on behalf of cancer-stricken friend and his friend's wife, put out a request to anyone who could help arrange a screening of the nine-minute prologue to "Star Trek Into Darkness" or the entire movie, if at all possible.

Word had circulated previously that a cut of the film did exist, so a screening wasn't entirely out of the question, but even in extreme cases, movies like "Star Trek Into Darkness" are the most closely guarded.

However, three days after the original posting, the friend of the dying man gave an update. "Holy cow everybody!!! I just heard from [my friend's] wife that they are going to do it!! I don't know who it what the path was to get there but thank you so much to everyone that tried to help!!!"

Another user, who also knows the man, offered up additional details. "Thanks everyone, and a huge thanks to OP ideeyut for posting this. JJ Abrams just called Dan's wife and left a message. He's going to try to arrange a screening for Dan, either of the film or at least of the 9 minute promo reel."

What say you now, J.J. haters? The man clearly cares a lot about his fans, and that is something we simply cannot feel cynical about.

"Star Trek Into Darkness" opens on May 17, 2013.

Honorable Mentions Of 2012: 'Lincoln' Dec 31st 2012, 18:30

Lincoln

You've seen our Top Ten of 2012 list, but now let's take a look back at the movies that just missed the cut. These are our Honorable Mentions of 2012.

Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" didn't exactly have the deck stacked in its favor when it came to box office success. The running time clocks in at nearly two and a half hours. It does away with the traditional biopic formula and only focuses on a small portion of the sixteenth president's life, the struggle to pass the 13th Amendment. Plus, we all know how that turned out.

But looking at Spielberg's loving portrait of one of our great national heroes ignores so much of what makes "Lincoln" a fascinating and enthralling movie from start to finish.

The most obvious and relevant place to begin is Daniel Day-Lewis' performance. Sight unseen, one would like imagine that the Academy Award winner would repackage Daniel Plainview, but nicer this time. Instead, Day-Lewis went in the opposite direction, opting for a historically accurate vocal register and a kind demeanor, much different from the stoic man we see on the back of a five dollar bill. The performance is an utter inspiration, not only from an acting standpoint, but how it complements the story and our collective history.

Though less apparent than the Method habits of the leading man, Tony Kushner's soberingly intelligent and witty screenplay deserves an equal amount of recognition. Taking on a procedural format, the audience experiences 19th century Washington and the frustrations running through the period.

What Spielberg managed to achieve here was to ignore the cynical expectations of internet commenters that were largely based on one poorly cut trailer. Coming off of "War Horse," it was easy to expect Spielberg would take a maudlin swing at one of the most beloved figures in American history without adding at teeth to his defining moment. Instead, he assembled his best effort in a decade in a manner that both stated true to his sensibilities while never undermining the complex nature of the politics.

What were your honorable mentions of 2012? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter!

J.J. Abrams Was Approached To Direct 'Star Wars 7' Dec 27th 2012, 19:00

Star TrekJ.J. Abrams has once again stated that he will not directing "Star Wars: Episode VII," despite having a conversation with Kathleen Kennedy about the job early on.

Earlier this year when the world exploded with "Star Wars" news, people were quick to look to Abrams as a possible directorial candidate. A known fan, Abrams had the chops and the geek cred to pull it off, but he wasn't interested.

He had previously told HollywoodLife that he was too much of a fan to get involved with the new project.

But now, speaking with Empire, Abrams clarifies what happened early on.

According to the "Star Trek" director, there was an early conversation, but it never went past that because of his loyalty to both sci-fi franchises.

"I guess the franchises could go up against each other, but I'm not thinking that far ahead! I'm a huge fan of' 'Star Wars,' 'Empire' and 'Jedi,' and the idea of the world continuing is exciting and will be amazing," Abram said.

"Kathy Kennedy is a friend and there are no smarter producers. It's in great hands. There were the very early conversations and I quickly said that because of my loyalty to 'Star Trek,' and also just being a fan, I wouldn't even want to be involved in the next version of those things. I declined any involvement very early on. I'd rather be in the audience not knowing what was coming, rather than being involved in the minutiae of making them."

Honorable Mentions of 2012: 'Argo' Dec 27th 2012, 20:00

Affleck

You've seen our Top Ten of 2012 list, but now let's take a look back at the movies that just missed the cut. These are our Honorable Mentions of 2012.

What the hell happened to Ben Affleck? The guy goes from being a punch line to being the director Warner Bros. supposedly wanted for their big "Justice League" effort.

You want to know how he did it? He made his movies.

Instead of being just the next actor to try his hand at directing, Affleck took another road. He found the grown-up stories that he wanted to tell and made them in intelligent ways. Every step of the way, with "Gone Baby Gone," "The Town," and now "Argo," Affleck has made his film. They aren't large in scale. There isn't a ton of action or enough humor to fill out a trailer, but they are made for adults, never assuming that the audience is dumb. With "Argo," Affleck to another step forward in refining that formula.

Based on the true story of Americans trapped in a hostile Iran, "Argo" took a chapter of history that was only recently declassified to the public and made it into a fantastic thriller that's actually one part Hollywood satire. So what if the entire airport sequence was embellished for drama? You didn't breathe once during it.

Up next, Affleck may attempt to make Stephen King's epic novel "The Stand" into a film, but here's to hoping that he doesn't forget the type of movies he's been making.

What did you think of "Argo"? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter!

Sweet Tweet: Rebel Wilson Goes Bare (Again) Ahead of Hosting MTV Movie Awards Dec 27th 2012, 23:01

She's gotten (almost) bare once before, and she's done it again! Now Rebel Wilson, who is hosting the 2013 MTV Movie Awards, found the rock musical "bare" to be pitch perfect.

Our Rebel with a cause Tweeted:

To the amazing cast of BARE, thanks for having me tonight! Love Rebel x twitter.com/RebelWilson/st…

— Rebel Wilson (@RebelWilson) December 27, 2012

Love the pic of everyone! And critics and audiences are def loving "bare." It was first staged more than ten years ago, and the story revolves around teens in a religious boarding school who are having questions about their sexuality and who they are. If you think musicals are all honky-tonky and silly, think again. "bare" also gets extra serious by partnering with different orgs that are dedicated to improving people's lives, especially LGBT people.

The socially conscious musical is partnered with different LGBT orgs, including the Human Rights Campaign, Athlete Ally and the Tyler Clementi Foundation, to connect the boundary-breaking show with relevant resources. The Human Rights Campaign, or HRC, is the country's biggest org for LGBT civil rights. Athlete Ally is about respecting everyone involved in sports, never mind their sexuality or gender. The Tyler Clementi Foundation is an aid for LGBT youth and friends, and it was started after Tyler, its namesake, too his own life. Tyler, like too many others, was a victim of digital abuse.

It's still awhile before movies are gonna be nominated for the 2013 MTV Movie Awards, but it's not too early to start talking. What socially conscious movies do you think should be nominated? Let us know in the comments, or on Twitter @MTVact!

[Video] Against Me! Singer Laura Jane Grace Talks Style + Being Transgender Dec 20th 2012, 20:50

Laura Jane Grace, the lead singer of the band Against Me! knows a thing or two about style, and as a woman who is transgender, she also knows the importance of acceptance. In the latest episode of MTV's House of Style Laura shows us her punky fashion sense, and also talks about being true to yourself.

She opens up about associating with females early in life, including looking at Madonna and thinking, "That's me." A few years ago she decided it was time to transition.

"There are so many moments in life where you feel guilt and you feel shame and all that, but you get to the point where you realize things aren't going to change," she says. "After you come out, and after you start talking about it, you kind of feel stupid for how long you haven't deal with the issue, because people have been so overwhelmingly supportive."

Laura's fans have def been super supportive, and so has her wife, Heather.

"I'm very happy with myself and I'm very comfortable with myself," Laura says.

A lot of the episode deals with clothing and shoe styles, and Laura says part of the reason she's in House of Style is because it's a way of giving back to others that are transgender who have helped her on YouTube and other places.

"When I was fourteen-years-old, if I was watching House of Style, watching a transsexual being interviewed and talking about that, then it would have completely changed my life," she says. "I would have felt saved."

If you're transsexual, transgender, or experiencing gender dysphoria, you're far from alone. Laura shows you can come out as your real self and live a totally happy, healthy life. Best of 2012: Top 5 Actions Taken on MTV Act Dec 20th 2012, 21:49

Photos: (Getty)

'Tis the season for list-making, amiright? Naughty lists, nice lists, wish lists, gift lists, grocery lists, guest lists. To-do lists get a special charge this time of year. Resolution lists get their annual dose of ambition. Year-In-Review lists? We're all over them.

We've rounded up the top actions taken on MTV Act in 2012, zooming in on who and what made the biggest splash this year. The year's top five actions were all powered by some of your fave pop culture leading ladies. Here are those causes you took action on most and our top-lessons-learned!

#5 Take Action With Lady Gaga

If imitation is the greatest form of flattery, then let's just say it: Lady Gaga is gaga for Madge, indeed! Gaga takes a cue from that other Queen of Pop -- or so they say -- showing fans that self expression, self-love and good times are worth celebrating! Baby, she was born this way, and after opting to support the Born This Way Foundation over Madonna's Raising Malawi this January, 763 of you are proud to say the same. She may not have topped the support Madonna received (more on that later...), but landing at this year's no. 5 slot is quite the achievement. LESSON LEARNED: Everyone wins when it comes to good deeds.

#4 Take Action For Selena Gomez

Back when a Bieber-Gomez split was practically inconceivable -- (remember those days? sigh ...) -- we staged some phony tension with our all-in-good-fun Act-Off. In that benign battle, Selena took the trophy, drawing 936 votes for her UNICEF work. Will they reunite 4-eva and eva? Who knows. But at their age, a few solid years is a relationship win regardless, if you ask us, and his charity:water work makes Bieber a winner, too. Did their philanthropic mindsets add to their still-intact (we insist) chemistry? We're gonna go with yes. LESSON LEARNED: Altruism is a tie that binds.

#3 Show Your Love With Snooki

Did you ever think you'd see the day when our favorite Jersey girl topped the charity list? Well, here it is, friends. Maybe we shouldn't be so surprised. After all, motherhood seem to have given Snooks a whole new POV -- one that radiates love conquers all. With her Valentine's Day efforts to promote love and service, Snooki shot straight to fans' hearts, drawing charitable entries from 1,212 of youLESSON LEARNED: Giving back is romantic.

#2 Take Action For Madonna

We wanted to know: Which pop queen is your fave? With 2,434 actions from readers like you, Madonna swept our Act-Off against the aforementioned Lady Gaga. Though she first hit her stride decades ago, Madge is clearly the real deal, still guiding pop culture -- from fashion to dance moves to affected accents and, thank goodness, charitable impact. She is committed to strengthening her Raising Malawi organization and will likely be gyrating to empowering lyrics for decades yet to come. LESSON LEARNED: Consistency rules.

And this year's number one Action...

#1 Demi Lovato Uses Her Voice

What a year for Demi! She took home the 2012 MTV VMA Best Video With a Message Moonman. We've seen her shake down  magazine meanies. She got Katie Couric talking about her own struggles with body image. She got us thinking about how to make things easier for new generations of young girls. She did it all with grace, kindness and honesty -- never talking bad about her bullies and never sensationalizing her own struggles. She put in the work, and as role modeling goes, the work has paid off. Some 3,848 of you have taken action with Demi, vowing to carry the torch she lit in her MTV News special doc, "Stay Strong." LESSON LEARNED: Nice girls do finish first.

The very bottom line from the lessons collected in 2012's Action brigade? Every action counts! Let's go out with a bang -- add your Act to the mix by taking action at the end of every single post on MTV Act.

It's been a banner week for Mark Wahlberg. Yesterday, we got a glimpse at the trailer for his upcoming actioner "Pain and Gain," co-starring Dwayne Johnson, in addition to a look at his 2013 opener "Broken City" by way of our exclusive set visit.

From all appearances, the draw of this thriller is in getting to watch Wahlberg go toe-to-toe with co-star Russell Crowe, an experience which the "Ted" star told us was as challenging as it was satisfying.

"It was intense, but it was intense in a great way," Wahlberg told MTV News of working with Crowe. "When he showed up we had already shot most of the movie except for his scenes, and he just showed up and we didn't have any time to really talk or anything. [Director] Allen [Hughes] asked us, 'Do you guys want to rehearse?' and we both said, 'No let's do it,' and we dove into the biggest scene in the movie. It's really two guys going at it, and it was great for us as actors because we weren't trying to outdo each other as actors, but the characters were, so you had that freedom to really push each others' buttons.

Wahlberg went on to say that he was the most impressed with Crowe's preparation and professionalism.

"I've never seen a guy as prepared or more prepared as me and focused," he said. "I'm a preparation freak and it was just such a nice thing to see. You work with so many people and you think, "Oh people forgot that they're professionals and they're being paid to show up on time and be prepared,' that was not the case with Mr. Crowe. And when you're working with people that talented, I always love the opportunity because it just raises your game. He is the kind of actor I want to be," he said.

Adding to the star power behind Wahlberg and Crowe are a noteworthy group of supporting players: Catherine Zeta-Jones, Kyle Chandler ("Friday Night Lights"), Jeffrey Wright ("Source Code"), Barry Pepper ("True Grit"), and Justin Chambers ("Grey's Anatomy"). Look for "Broken City" in theaters everywhere January 18.

Do you plan to see "Broken City"?

Get Ready For Lady Gaga's Born Brave Bus Tour! Dec 20th 2012, 22:56

You've already gotten your tickets for that great 2013 Lady Gaga concert in your area, but did you know there's even more to look forward to in the coming year? Gaga's Born This Way Foundation is launching the Born Brave Bus Tour!

The Born Brave Bus tour begins on January 14 in Tacoma, Washington, and will be going with Lady Gaga across the country with her Born This Way Ball tour. Before the concert starts, people between the ages of 13 and 25 can hang with the BBBT, where they'll be treated to food, activities and the music of Lady Starlight. But this is more than your typical pre-party -- this is also an opportunity to get more involved with the Born This Way Foundation and learn self-acceptance. At each event, there will be plenty of important resources available, including volunteer opportunities, bullying info and other health services. Very importantly, the bus tour will connect people to services like these in their own community.

The Born This Way Foundation has hooked up with groups like The Trevor Project, the National Association of School Psychologist, and Campus Pride to put this together. On top of that, Viacom, which is the parent company for MTV, is the lead media partner. *toots own horn*

Later in December you'll get the opportunity to pre-register for the events, and make sure you keep up with the Born This Way Foundation's website.

The Biggest Plot Holes Of 2012 Dec 14th 2012, 19:30

Prometheus

By Hannah Soo Park

With intricate storylines and mind-boggling twists, this year's biggest blockbusters didn't fail to pull out all the attention-grabbing stops. But the winding plotlines and extravagant outcomes also came at the cost of leaving major questions unanswered for audiences, even before the end credits began to roll.

From the obvious to the more complex thought-provokers, these plot holes and unresolved issues made it difficult to leave theaters without demanding the answers we truly needed.

(Major spoilers ahead, obviously!)

"Prometheus"
Ridley Scott's long-awaited return to sci-fi opened to a mixed bag of reviews, but whether or not the movie was a wild success, it undoubtedly has its fair share of unaddressed issues. One of the biggest questions: Why did David, the android played by Michael Fassbender, poison Logan Marshall-Green's Holloway, with the mysterious "black goo"? Was it out of mere curiosity? Did he actually know that an alien baby would come of it? Was he just having a bad day? Writer Damon Lindelof, the mastermind of unanswered questions, addressed the confusion in the "Prometheus" Blu-ray special features commentary, explaining that the poisoning was David's way of finding a solution for Weyland's (Guy Pearce) dying state. "In David's estimation, the humans around him are rats and Holloway is certainly a willing rat subject," Lindelof said in the commentary. And that's all we have for now.

"The Avengers"
What we do know, after watching "The Avengers," is that shawarma is the post-saving-the-world-snack of choice for our favorite league of superheroes. But what we're still questioning is the supposed demigod-ness behind the villain Loki, who, instead of targeting S.H.I.E.L.D director Nick Fury—the leader of the organization he's vehemently trying to put an end to—decides to mind-control Hawkeye, a scientist and random S.H.I.E.L.D agents, instead. And what happened to his ability to regenerate quickly enough to dodge bullets? Apparently, it became nonexistent when he faced the Hulk, who easily crushed him into the floor several times.

"The Amazing Spider-Man"
This "Spider-Man" reboot may've managed to successfully capture the inevitable awkward bits that come with a budding teen romance, but that doesn't mean the comic book movie was successful in tying up all of its loose ends. Not only do we never learn the fate of Rajit Ratha—the man who gets Dr. Curt Connors to test his own lizard serum—who's left trapped in a car that's hanging from the Williamsburg Bridge, but we're also left to wonder what might've happened to Uncle Ben's killer. Did Peter Parker forget that he was on a serious manhunt to avenge his uncle because he was too busy saving New York City from a giant lizard? But hey, at least we know which search engine Spider-Man prefers—and sorry Google, it's not Google.

"Skyfall"
Let's cut to the chase on this one. We're lead to believe that Silva intended to get captured, so that he can plant himself into M16's new turf, anticipating that Bond and Q will be able to decipher his computer code that's supposed to shut M16 security down and open the doors for his escape, after which he'll obviously kill his armed captors (with no weapons) and escape to the Tube, where he picks up a disguise handed to him like a newspaper from friendly bystanders, who are actually his accomplices. But of course he knew that Bond would chase him down to the spot where he's planted a bomb that would detonate and keep the agent from pursuing him any further. Our final theory: Silva has impeccable timing or is a seriously-devoted man of faith.

"The Dark Knight Rises"
From the questionable hand-to-hand combat scene (you have weapons—use them!) to the sudden, full-fledged romance between Bruce Wayne and Miranda Tate, the third installment of the Batman trilogy is riddled with unexplained plot points and execution. We're most flustered with how Bane managed to drop Batman off at a far-flung, sandy locale and then immediately return back to Gotham to continue his destruction campaign. Similarly, how does Wayne catch a flight back to Gotham with no money or ID? Did Bane accidentally leave Wayne's wallet with his change of clothes lying around in the underground prison? And finally, how does Bruce Wayne go completely unrecognized sitting in an outdoor café at the end of the movie? Yes, it's in Italy, but anyone in Italy would surely recognize a man who's supposedly the once-renowned figure of a global (fictional) city, no? One working theory: Batman really did die once the bomb detonated and the scene is really a figment of Alfred's dream, you know, "Inception" style.

Holiday 'Django Unchained'-Quentin Tarantino Gift Guide Dec 14th 2012, 20:30

Django

Wouldn't you know? "Django Unchained" hits theaters on December 25. Considering that fortuitous timing, we thought it wise to suggest some Quentin Tarantino-themed gifts for your holiday season.

This is the "Django Unchained"-Quentin Tarantino gift guide.

The Homework
If you're completely unfamiliar with the spaghetti western genre, this is where you start. These three films, starring Clint Eastwood and directed by Sergio Leone, created the style and remain its most popular examples. (Amazon, $19.99)

Leone

The Next Step
Once you have mastered the basics, this is your next logical step. As much as Tarantino owes to Leone, he's giving a lot of the credit for "Django Unchained"'s inspiration to Sergio Corbucci, who directed the original "Django." (Amazon, $16.93)

Django

The Very Beginning
Since the true star of any Tarantino movie is the script, why not look back at the screenplay that made Tarantino into an indie darling? (Amazon, $11.20)

Reservoir Dogs

The Tunes
Once you see "Django Unchained," you'll learn immediately why this is a must own. Tarantino takes such care choosing the music for each film that each soundtrack ends up being like a brilliantly curated mix tape. (Amazon, $9.99)

Django Unchained

The Movies
We've recommended this set enough by now to let you know that this is a serious must own. If you really want to experience Tarantino's filmmaking this holiday season, this is the set to get. (Amazon, $79.96)

How To Cope + Help With The Sandy Hook Elementary Shooting Dec 14th 2012, 21:13

Photo: (Gettty)

Earlier today a gunman opened fire in the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. According to CNN, 26 people were killed in the school shooting, and the suspect is now deceased in the building.

Twenty of the victims were children, and six adults, including the principal and guidance counselor, were killed. Adam Lanza, has been identified as the shooter. So far three handguns connected to him have been found: a Glock, .223 caliber rifle and a Sig Sauer. Lanza's mother was a teacher at the elementary school and is among those who have died. As of this writing, it has also been announced by CNN that a senior law enforcement official said Lanza's brother is also dead.

Speaking at a live press conference, President Obama said that America has endured too many tragedies like this, and listed off shootings at Aurora, the Sikh Temple and other places. He said that upon hearing the news, "I reacted not as a president, but as anyone else would, as a parent...I know there's not a parent in America who doesn't feel the same overwhelming grief that I do."

Because this happened so recently, it will take time to set up funds and other ways to help those affected by the shooting. We will update you on ways you can help the victims and their families when these opportunities arise. In the meantime, we have some suggestions for things you can do right now.

+ Get Up & Get Out

Tragedies like this can weigh so heavily on us that it makes it hard to move or think about anything else. The simple act of taking a walk, hitting the gym, running some errands or getting food with friends, can help us cope with tough feelings and feel better.

+ Learn More About The Issues

Situations like this are very sensitive subjects, and there is no single way to fully prevent something like this from ever happening again. However, there are ways to make this much less likely to happen. This can be a time to learn more about mental illness, violence, gun control, and other issues linked to the incident. The more informed you are, the more power you have to help make change.

+ Turn Anger Into Action

This is a horrific story, and as we learn more about it and the issues surrounding it, there will be more ways to take action. Taking action can include helping the victims and their families as opportunities arise, or getting involved in programs aimed at curbing violence. You could also write to your representatives about how you feel on the issue of gun control. You can also express your condolences online by Tweeting with the hashtags, #PrayForNewtown and #Newtown

If you are hurting from this, whether you're personally involved or not, that's absolutely understandable. It's okay to express your feelings. We recommend you check out halfofus.com, but if you want to talk to another person, feel free to call 1-800-273-TALK.
